Born in Detroit, 1950, William Truman Hosner (Bill to his friends) earned his BFA at Wayne State University, and went on to study illustration at The Center for Creative Studies, College of Art and Design in Detroit. During his 17 years as a professional illustrator, his assignments included The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Field and Stream magazine, CBS-Fox Video, and Reader’s Digest. At the peak of a very successful career in commercial art, Hosner re-focused himself: Plein-air fine art painting captured his passion, studying under two master pastel painters at the Scottsdale Artists School in Arizona. Over the past two decades Hosner has also been fortunate to have the personal mentoring of Max Altekruse, himself a student of the renowned Frank Rielly of the Art Students League in New York City.
Among his most recent awards, Hosner has achieved uncommon success: from 2009-2012, he has received ‘First Prize’ from the French Pastel Society in Giverny, France ; ‘First Prize’ from the American Pastel Society in New York City; and ‘Best of Show’ from the Pastel Society of the West Coast, along with numerous other prestigious awards and prizes. He is a member of the Master Pastelist International Association of Pastel Societies, the Maitre Pastelliste Societe de Pastel de L’est du Canada, the Distinguished Member Pastel Society of the West Coast, and the Master Pastelist Pastel Society of America.
Paintings by W Truman Hosner are featured in national and international museum collections and exhibitions ranging from New York City . . . to California . . . to Canada . . . to France . . . to Asia.
Painting from life, the integrity of Hosner’s art is never in question as he conveys through his works the evolving moods and dynamics that can be captured only through the art of plein air painting.
Hosner’s philanthropic interests include two on-going efforts over the past 10 years: he spends one day per month at Children’s Hospital in Detroit, drawing portraits of young patients in their rooms and gifting the drawings to them and their families. In 2010 Hosner founded the Café Society Educational Scholarship Fund to assist Northern Michigan coffee house baristas with needed funds to pursue higher education.*
