John Poon
John Poon is a painter and a man of great merit. Leaving behind the life as an instructor and administrator for the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, John moved to Wyoming and then Utah where John lives with his children.
Despite his busy life John’s paintings have proven their quality over the years by consistently becoming part of numerous collections and receiving national awards. Some of John’s accolades include Landscape of Merit from the highly competitive and prestigious national show, Arts for the Parks in Jackson, WY, Artists’ Choice at the Sonoma Plein Air, and Best of Show in the Society of Western Artists annual national competition.
John is a plein air painter, painting out in the landscape, rising to the challenge of changing light and fleeting time and weather. He quickly finds the structure of a landscape and uses this knowledge to simplify the fields, mountains, clouds, and architecture into purposeful brushstrokes, expressing the striking beauty of a moment in time.
As a teacher, John is highly sought after by painters of every level. Having focused on what he himself has learned, are well as the intellectual aspects of painting which are often pushed to the wayside, John gives useful, impactful information to his students from coast to coast. He teaches online classes for the Academy as well as BYU.
John has been given the Distinguished Alumni Award for 2012 from The Academy of Art University and has been featured in many articles and national periodicals including Southwest Art, The American Art Collector and most recently Plein Air Magazine.

“As a “workshop junkie” I can honestly state that John Poon’s instruction is the best I’ve had in landscape painting. He makes the principles taught by Carlson and Payne come to life and adds valuable tips he’s learned from his own rich experience in painting. He is a master at explaining composition and color. He is a dedicated teacher who gives his undivided attention to each student and the class as a whole. His workshops can be appreciated by students of all levels.”
